Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

These pumpkin chocolate chip muffins are soft, gently spiced, and filled with pockets of melted chocolate. Pumpkin purée keeps the crumb moist, while cinnamon and ginger add warmth. The batter mixes easily by hand, making this a simple recipe for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or sharing with family.

Ingredients

Makes: 12 muffins

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour (210 g)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup plain pumpkin purée (about 240 g)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup neutral oil
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar (100 g)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (50 g)
  • 1 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla flavoring
  • ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips

How to Make Them

  1. Prepare the oven. Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Mix the wet ingredients. In another bowl, whisk pumpkin purée, eggs, oil, both sugars, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Combine. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture just until no dry flour remains. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Fill the pan. Divide the batter evenly among the liners, filling each about three-quarters full.
  6. Bake. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the tops spring back lightly and a toothpick inserted away from a chocolate chip comes out without wet batter.
  7. Cool. Let the muffins rest in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Tips for Soft Muffins

Use plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling, which already contains sugar and spices. Measure the flour carefully and avoid overmixing once the wet and dry ingredients come together.

For an attractive finish, reserve a few chocolate chips and scatter them over the batter before baking.

Easy Variations

Replace half the chocolate chips with chopped walnuts for extra crunch. For a dairy-free version, choose dairy-free chocolate chips and check the remaining ingredient labels.

Serving Ideas

Enjoy the muffins slightly warm while the chocolate is soft, or let them cool completely for an easy snack. They pair well with coffee, tea, or a glass of milk.
